As AI translation tools become embedded in professional workflows, understanding how these systems operate has moved from a niche concern to a core requirement. Transparency in machine translation (MT) ensures that users—especially translators—can assess the accuracy, reliability, and risks associated with AI-generated content. This includes knowing how models are trained, how outputs are generated, and how data is processed.
The February 2025 revision of the EU AI Act mandates increased transparency from providers of general-purpose AI, including MT platforms. These tools must disclose basic information about their models, training data sources, and limitations, as well as provide clarity around data handling and storage. This empowers users to make informed choices based on both functionality and ethical considerations.
For translators working in high-stakes sectors such as law, healthcare, or finance, using tools that are open about their inner workings is essential. Choosing transparent AI solutions isn’t just about trust—it’s about protecting professional integrity and client confidentiality.
