Legal translation is one of the most challenging areas for machine translation (MT), requiring not only linguistic precision but also deep contextual awareness. Recent advancements in large context AI translation have improved how machines handle complex sentence structures and specific terminology—especially in contracts, legislation, and compliance documentation.
In a 2025 case study following the EU AI Act update, a legal translation firm tested large context models against traditional MT. The AI tool, which considered full clauses and paragraph relationships, delivered notably better consistency in terminology and formatting. Importantly, it also adhered to the Act’s mandates on data residency and transparency, which are now compulsory for translation tools processing sensitive content.
This example shows that with proper integration, AI can support legal translators by reducing repetitive tasks and improving first-draft quality. Still, human expertise remains irreplaceable—AI should be your co-pilot, not the pilot.
